How to Compare Solar Quotes in Colorado

A practical checklist for comparing Colorado solar proposals, including system design, production assumptions, equipment, warranties, financing, and installer responsibility.

Solar proposals can look similar on the first page and still describe very different projects.

One quote may include roof or electrical work that another leaves out. Production estimates may use different assumptions. A lower monthly payment may come from a longer loan rather than a lower project cost.

The goal is not to find the proposal with the biggest savings number. It is to compare the scope, assumptions, responsibilities, and long-term fit.

1. Confirm what each proposal includes

Start with the complete project scope. Each proposal should identify:

  • Solar system size in kilowatts
  • Panel and inverter models
  • Estimated first-year production
  • Roof planes and panel placement
  • Electrical work and service upgrades, if needed
  • Permitting, inspection, and utility interconnection responsibilities
  • Monitoring equipment and access
  • Battery or EV-charging equipment, if included
  • Estimated schedule and major project milestones

If an item is not written into the proposal, do not assume it is included.

2. Compare production assumptions

Two systems with the same rated size can have different production estimates because of roof direction, tilt, shade, equipment, and modeling assumptions.

Ask each installer to explain:

  • What shade information was used
  • Which roof surfaces are included
  • Whether expected system losses are shown
  • Whether production degradation is included
  • What weather data supports the estimate
  • Whether the estimate reflects the final proposed equipment

A useful production estimate should be traceable. It should not depend on a sales claim that cannot be explained.

3. Separate system size from expected production

System size describes the rated capacity of the equipment. Production estimates how much electricity the system may generate over time.

A larger system is not automatically better. It needs to fit the property, electricity use, utility rules, budget, and future plans.

Review at least a full year of utility bills. If an EV, heat pump, addition, or other large electrical load is planned, make sure the proposal identifies how that future use was estimated.

4. Look beyond the panel brand

Equipment matters, but a proposal should be evaluated as a complete system. Compare:

  • Panel rating and product warranty
  • Inverter type, capacity, and warranty
  • Mounting and attachment approach
  • Monitoring capabilities
  • Battery power and energy capacity, when applicable
  • Compatibility with future storage or EV charging
  • Workmanship coverage from the installer

A premium component does not correct a poor layout, unclear scope, or weak installation plan.

5. Review the roof and electrical assumptions

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends asking an installer about roof condition, repairs, leak responsibility, credentials, subcontractors, and warranties.

Your proposal should state whether the roof is ready for installation and identify known electrical work. Ask whether the installer has reviewed:

  • Roof age and condition
  • Structural questions
  • Main electrical panel capacity
  • Available breaker space
  • Meter and service configuration
  • Equipment and battery locations
  • Conduit paths

Unexpected scope changes are easier to avoid when these details are evaluated before the contract is final.

6. Compare total price before monthly payment

Monthly payment is only one part of financing. Compare:

  • Cash price
  • Financed amount
  • Interest rate and term
  • Fees or dealer costs
  • Expected payment changes
  • Prepayment terms
  • Who owns the system and equipment
  • What happens if the home is sold

Cost per watt can help compare solar-only systems with similar scopes. Divide the solar project cost by the system capacity in watts. Do not use it to compare a solar-only quote with a proposal that also includes a battery, roof work, panel upgrade, or EV charger.

Discovery Clean Energy does not recommend relying on a single payback number. Ask for the assumptions behind utility escalation, production, incentives, maintenance, and financing.

7. Understand warranties and service

Solar projects may include separate warranties for panels, inverters, batteries, workmanship, roof penetrations, and production.

Ask:

  • Who is responsible for service after installation?
  • How do you request support?
  • Who handles a manufacturer warranty claim?
  • Does workmanship coverage transfer to a future owner?
  • What is excluded?
  • Are travel, labor, or equipment removal costs covered?

A warranty is more useful when the service process is clear.

8. Verify the installer

The Department of Energy recommends researching and interviewing multiple qualified installers. Review licensing, insurance, certifications, installation history, local references, and whether subcontractors will perform any part of the work.

Useful questions include:

  • How long have you worked in solar?
  • How many systems have you installed?
  • Who will manage permitting and utility interconnection?
  • Who will be on site?
  • Why did you choose this design and equipment?
  • What could cause the scope or price to change?

Clear answers are part of the proposal.

9. Compare the same goal

One installer may optimize for the lowest upfront price. Another may design for future electrification, outage backup, or more complete energy coverage.

Decide what matters first:

  • Lower grid dependence
  • Long-term electricity cost control
  • Backup for selected loads
  • Broader whole-home resilience
  • Future EV or heat-pump demand
  • A coordinated solar, battery, and charging system

Then compare which proposal best supports that goal.

A simple proposal checklist

Before signing, make sure you can answer:

  1. What equipment and work are included?
  2. How was expected production calculated?
  3. What current and future loads shaped the design?
  4. What are the cash and financed prices?
  5. Which warranties apply, and who provides service?
  6. Who handles permits, inspections, and interconnection?
  7. What could change after signing?
  8. Why is this design appropriate for this property?

A strong solar proposal should become clearer as you ask questions.
