The challenge
Evergreen Fire/Rescue had two goals for its main campus in Evergreen, Colorado: save money in its annual budget, and reduce the emissions the campus produces.
In the mountains, snow drives the design. Snow loads in Evergreen are especially high, and a rooftop array has to carry that weight every winter for decades.
The solution
Discovery designed and installed a 180 kW solar system on the main campus.
To handle the mountain snow, we specified panels rated for extra-high surface loads, chosen specifically for the heavy snow Evergreen sees each winter.
The results
The array generates clean electricity on site at the main campus. Every kilowatt-hour it produces is one the district does not buy from the grid, which lowers both annual energy costs and the campus's emissions.
For a public safety agency, lower utility costs leave more room in the budget for its core work.
